Volume 2, Issue 1

Although iron stair components have been available for approximately 10 years, their popularity continues to grow. If your company is not currently including iron balusters and newels as part of your product mix, we recommend that great consideration be given to offering this line to your customers, as this could be a very profitable segment of your business. The misconception is that iron costs more than wood, however, the vast majority of our iron balusters & newels are comparable or less expensive than wood!

L.J. Smith offers an expansive line of ornamental iron balusters and coordinating newels for creating the perfect stair system combination. In all, we offer 41 different balusters and 4 newel styles in the finishes shown below. Here is a sampling of our available styles—see our full line systems catalog for the complete offering.

On February 9th, 2007 at the National Home Builders’ Association’s, International Builders’ Show in Orlando, Florida, the SMA will present a seminar titled, "Designing and Building Code Compliant Stairways" from 9-10 a.m. in Room 331 A, B & C. The IBS is one of the largest and best-attended trade shows in the nation. If you’re attending the IBS or know of someone who is, please recommend the seminar to them. This will be the first of many education committee programs oriented to potential customers of SMA members and hopefully the first of many in association with the NAHB.

Success is not a pie, with only so many slices to go around. The success of others has nothing to do with your success. Nor is your success measured by what others say or what others accomplish. We all have the tendency to compare ourselves with others. But the happy people in this life know it’s not against others that we compete.

The late Henry Fonda once said that a thoroughbred horse never looks at the other racehorses. It just concentrates on running the fastest race it can.

On our track to success, we have to fight the tendency to look at others and see how far they’ve come. The only thing that counts is how we use the potential we possess and that we run our race to the best of our abilities.

Some people make the future; most wait for the future to make them.

L. J. Smith conceived the idea of pre-primed balusters and was first to introduce them in an effort to provide our customers with a value added product at a lower cost.
