Selecting your Stair System

Selecting the component styles for your stairway should be simple, not complicated. L.J. Smith makes this process very easy with these "Four Steps for Selecting a Beautiful Stair System." As you review these steps, you will notice that we offer a very wide variety of styles from which to choose. Our wood stair parts are available in Alder, Ash, Beech, Birch, Cherry, Hemlock, Hickory, Mahogany, Maple, Poplar, Oak, Teak and Walnut. However, we will quote other species as well. Our wood balusters are also available with a factory primer coating. We also offer an ornamental iron collection of newels and balusters in these attractive finishes: Silver Vein, Oil Rubbed Bronze, Matte Black, Satin Black, Antique Bronze and Oil Rubbed Copper.

Step 1:

To simplify the selection process, begin by choosing either the POST TO POST style or OVER THE POST style of stairway.

  • Post to Post
  • Post to Post
  • Handrail runs between the newels
  • Post to Post
  • Over to Post
  • Handrail runs over top of the newels

Step 2:

After selecting a stairway style, there are a couple more style decisions that need to be made before selecting the stiarway components. First, decide if the stairway will have Open Treads or a Kneewall and what tread treatment will be utilized.

  • Post to Post
  • Open Tread Stairway
  • Post to Post
  • Kneewall Stairway

  • Post to Post
  • Open tread stairway, wood exposed both ends, carpet
  • Post to Post
  • Open tread stairway, no carpet
  • Post to Post
  • Kneewall stairway, carpet wall to wall

Step 3:

Select a Baluster. When selecting a wood baluster style, you can choose either a Square Top or a Pin Top style. See available wood baluster styles or iron baluster styles.

Step 4:

Select a Handrail style. A corresponding handrail to the selected baluster is then chosen. See available handrail profiles.
